Fishin’ Frenzy demo: why Britain’s favourite fishing slot has the lowest RTP of any slot here

Fishin’ Frenzy is one of the most played slots in Britain. It is on every high street bookmaker’s terminal lineup and every UK casino’s front page, it has spawned more sequels than any other British slot, and its fisherman is probably the most recognisable character in the category.

It also has the lowest RTP of any slot reviewed on this site. Only Crazy Time, a live game show rather than a slot, states less at 96.08%.

96.12%, and why that number stands out

Most modern slots cluster tightly around 96.5%. That is not a rule, it is a convention, and studios generally stay near it because operators expect it. Fishin’ Frenzy sits well below.

The gap looks small written down. In practice, 96.12% against 96.71% means the game keeps about 18% more of your stake over time than Big Bass Bonanza does. On £1,000 put through, the difference in theoretical return is roughly £6. Not ruinous, but it is real, it is permanent, and it runs the wrong way for the most popular fishing slot in the country.

What makes it interesting is that Fishin’ Frenzy is not a modern game trying to buy a huge ceiling with a thin middle. It is a plain 5 reel, 10 line slot from an older design tradition. Free games cannot be retriggered

Fishin’ Frenzy gives you the spins you triggered and that is the round. Whatever the fisherman collects, he collects inside that fixed window. It makes the feature far more predictable, which some players prefer and which is also the reason the game’s ceiling is nowhere near its rivals’.

The base game

Ten paylines, five reels, wins from the left except the scatter, which pays from any position. Prizes are multiplied by the line bet rather than the total stake, which is the older convention and worth knowing when you read the paytable inside the game: a prize of 100 on a 12p line bet is £12, not 100 times your £1.20 stake.

The fisherman is the wild and the collector. The fish carry cash values. The mechanic that made this game famous, and that Pragmatic Play later borrowed wholesale for Big Bass, is the fisherman landing during free spins and collecting every fish value on screen.

The stake range is the unusual part

A £400 maximum on a ten line slot is high. Most of the games on this site stop between £240 and £300, and they are busier, more modern products. Fishin’ Frenzy will take twice the stake of Sugar Rush 1000 on a spin.

The 20p floor is the same as most, and on ten lines that is 2p a line, so the game is genuinely cheap at the bottom. It is the ceiling that is out of step, and it exists because this game inherited its stake ladder from the betting shop terminals where it made its name.
