Responsible gambling

This site exists because free demos let you see what a game is before it costs you anything. That is genuinely useful. It is also not the whole picture, and the rest of this page is the part that matters more than any RTP figure we publish.

What a slot is designed to do

Every slot on this site returns less than it takes. That is not a flaw, a bad run or a rigged machine: it is the design, stated openly by the studio on the game’s own rules screen. A 96.5% RTP means the game is built to keep 3.5% of everything staked through it, forever, and no strategy, staking pattern or time of day changes that number.

There is no such thing as a game that is due. Each spin is independent of the one before it. A game that has paid nothing for an hour is exactly as likely to pay on the next spin as one that just paid.

What free demos do and do not tell you

A demo runs the same certified maths as the real game, so the mechanics you see are real. Two things about it are not.

The balance is not your money, and nobody plays a five-figure play balance the way they play their own. Demo play tells you very little about how a stake that matters to you will feel.

And twenty minutes is not a sample. If the free spins land early you will leave thinking the game is generous, and if they do not you will leave thinking it is broken. Neither impression is information, and treating a good demo session as evidence is one of the most common ways people talk themselves into a deposit.

Signs worth taking seriously

Gambling stops being entertainment quietly rather than dramatically. Some of the things worth noticing in yourself:

  • Playing longer or for more than you planned to, regularly rather than occasionally.
  • Going back to win money back after a loss.
  • Gambling with money meant for something else, or borrowing to do it.
  • Hiding how much you play, or how much you have lost, from people close to you.
  • Feeling restless or irritable when you try to cut down.
  • Playing to escape stress, boredom or low mood rather than for enjoyment.

None of these on its own means very much. Several of them together is worth acting on.

Tools that actually work

Every operator licensed in Great Britain has to offer these, and they are far more effective than willpower because they take the decision away from you at the moment you are least able to make it well.

  • Deposit limits. Set daily, weekly or monthly. Increases take 24 hours to apply; decreases apply immediately.
  • Time outs. A short break, from 24 hours to six weeks, with the account locked.
  • Reality checks. A pop-up at an interval you choose telling you how long you have been playing.
  • Self-exclusion. Six months or longer at a single operator, with marketing stopped and the account closed.
  • GAMSTOP. One free registration blocks you from every gambling site licensed in Great Britain at once, for six months, one year or five years. Sign up at gamstop.co.uk.

Free help, from people who are not us

  • GamCare runs the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133, free and open 24 hours a day, with live chat at gamcare.org.uk.
  • BeGambleAware has self-assessment tools and a directory of local support at begambleaware.org.
  • Gordon Moody provides residential and intensive treatment for severe gambling addiction at gordonmoody.org.uk.
  • The NHS runs specialist gambling clinics across England, and your GP can refer you.
  • Gamblers Anonymous holds free peer support meetings in person and online at gamblersanonymous.org.uk.

Blocking software

If you want gambling sites off your devices entirely, Gamban and BetBlocker both block gambling sites and apps across phones and computers. BetBlocker is free.

If someone else is the problem

Living with someone else’s gambling is its own thing and there is support for it specifically. GamCare’s helpline takes calls from family members, and GamAnon runs meetings for the people around a gambler rather than the gambler.

You are not overreacting by calling.
